We are honoured to announce the inaugural recipient of the Fertility New Zealand Life Membership – Dr John Peek CNZM. 

Dr Peek has been a cornerstone of fertility care in Aotearoa, dedicating over 40 years to advancing assisted reproductive technology and fertility treatments. As New Zealand’s first embryologist, he was instrumental in establishing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) services at National Women’s Hospital in Auckland, pioneering innovations that have become international standards.  

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to fertility treatment and reproductive health, Dr Peek received the Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) honour in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours. 

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr Peek was a steadfast volunteer with Fertility New Zealand for over 30 years.  

Recognising the importance of providing emotional and other support to those taking part in fertility treatment, in 1990 Dr Peek spearheaded the establishment of the Infertility Society of New Zealand, now Fertility New Zealand, having an impact on many thousands of people as they navigated their fertility challenges. From this beginning he has been an active supporter of the charity in a variety of roles, including board advisor, supporter and an incredible 29 years as a voluntary board member where he guided Fertility New Zealand though periods of growth, refocus and change. 

His commitment to our organisation and the countless individuals and whānau he has supported is immeasurable. 

At the 2024 Fertility NZ AGM, it was with immense gratitude that we bestowed upon Dr Peek our first Life Membership, acknowledging his unwavering dedication and the profound impact he has made not only on Fertility New Zealand, but the fertility community in Aotearoa.
