Calum Barrett
Board Member
Calum Barrett was previously Chair of the New Zealand Government’s Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology (ACART), serving on the Committee from 2018 to 2024. He has first hand experience of how assisted reproductive technology is regulated and on how ECART makes its decisions. During his time of ACART he led projects on surrogacy, embryo storage, human reproductive research, and posthumous reproduction.
Calum currently works for the Tertiary Education Commission, having previously worked in policy roles with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and New Zealand Police.
He holds a Bachelors of Laws (2011), a Bachelors of Arts (2013), and a Masters in Bioethics and Health Law awarded with Distinction (2015), the dissertation of which proposed ACART guidelines for the regulation of Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy in New Zealand.
Calum and his partner have a family history of cystic fibrosis, and lived experience of using fertility services to avoid this condition. They currently live in Wellington with their three young children.
